Zillow’s Big Appetite- Are They Consuming the Entire Real Estate Business

Last year, Zillow acquired Trulia – and the dust hasn’t even settled on that transaction, but the quickly growing media giant just picked up dotloop for a cool $108 million.

So what does this mean for us, as Realtors®? Are we expendable “middlemen” in real estate transactions who will no longer be necessary when Zillow connects buyers and sellers with a few simple forms?

IS ZILLOW PUTTING REALTORS OUT OF BUSINESS?

Alarmists are talking about how Zillow is going to cut Realtors out of real estate transactions, but don’t believe the hype. As long as you’re a Realtor who understands how to provide value to your clients, you’re indispensable – but you might need to change the way you do business.

THE PEOPLE CONNECTION- WHY IT WORKS (and Will Always Work)

Most people only buy homes once, twice… maybe three times in a lifetime. It’s a hugely personal decision, and it is an extremely emotional process.

Because home-buying is such a big decision, people don’t want to do it alone. They want someone with experience showing them the ropes; someone to guide them in the right direction.

Zillow can’t do that, no matter how many dotloops, Trulias and HotPads they acquire.

People are what make real estate transactions good transactions. Talented Realtors help hold deals together, educate their clients and turn a business transaction into a personal experience that leaves the buyer feeling confident and self-assured.

Real estate agents aren’t going anywhere. We might have to work hard to keep the focus on providing great client experiences, but we’re not “middlemen.” We’re not expendable.

Think about LegalZoom. LegalZoom gives the average Joe access to templates for wills, divorce paperwork and other DIY legal forms.

But when people need legal advice, guidance in complex cases or even just someone on their side, they pick up the phone and call a lawyer. LegalZoom can’t go into a courtroom with them, fight for their constitutional rights or argue for justice.

We’re the experts in our field, and we are there to help our clients through one of the biggest – if not the biggest – decisions of their lives.

We aren’t going anywhere, because people hold the entire real estate industry together.
