Perception Counts… Maybe More than You Think
The way people view your brand is a big deal. You have to have professionalism written all over everything you do; that means keeping your personal Facebook page private, your Twitter feed classy and your ads tasteful and respectful.
In the book The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, the authors Jack Trout and Al Ries insist, “Marketing is not a battle of products. It’s a battle of perceptions.” That means it’s your job to shape what your clients think about your brand – and you do that every day, sometimes without even realizing it.
Positioning in Your Marketplace
You always have to watch your brand’s positioning, too. It can change rapidly. Who are your competitors? What are things that you offer that your competitors don’t? How do you make sure your target market knows about the things that give you an edge over everyone else?
You can figure out all of these things by using Google.
Let’s say you focus on Thompson’s Station. Google “Thompson’s Station Realtor.” Start exploring the results, skipping the usual suspects such as Realtor.com, Zillow and Trulia.
Are they doing anything that you’re not doing? Are they blogging? Do they have active social media accounts? All of these things play a big role in branding and standing out among the competition, and they can help you spring forward – not just in the search results, but in real-life connections, as well.
